OUR HISTORY

In the fall of 1986, the Southern Nevada Chapter of Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD), now called Students Against Destructive Decisions, was established. By the summer of 1987, the organization held its first SADD Camp, promoting messages against drunk driving, drug use, and gang violence.

The camp’s success prompted the Clark County School District (CCSD) to assume leadership in 1990, rebranding the program as Students Taking Action to Terminate Unlawful Substances (S.T.A.T.U.S.), headed by Jim Shoop and Ron Ross.

In the late 1990s, CCSD relinquished control, and the program transitioned into a new phase under the name Helping Everyone Realize Opportunities (HEROs).

In 2005, HEROs split into several nonprofit entities, including Issues Concerning Adolescents of Nevada (ICAN), which was officially founded on November 16, 2006. ICAN achieved nonprofit 501(c)(3) status on April 2, 2008, and has since been dedicated to serving Nevada youth through annual summer camp programs and monthly leadership meetings.

Camp Lee Canyon has traditionally hosted ICAN’s summer camps; however, in 2019, the camp was temporarily relocated to Mingus Mountain, Arizona, due to scheduling conflicts. From 2020 to 2022, the COVID-19 pandemic halted summer camp events. In 2023, ICAN made its long-awaited return to Camp Lee Canyon, marking the first camp in four years. ICAN continued its programming in 2024 and is eager for another amazing camp in 2025!

Disclaimer: Although Issues Concerning Adolescents of Nevada (ICAN) was established in 2006, it was built upon the foundation of its predecessor organizations, each contributing to the development of what ICAN has become today!
