Issues Concerning Adolescents of Nevada (I.C.A.N.), a youth-centered nonprofit organization, will recognize Kick Butts Day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 25 at the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway in downtown Las Vegas. Adult and youth members will display shoes to illustrate a Nevada tobacco statistic in the center’s outdoor amphitheater. Approximately 700 shoes will be used in the display, and shoes will be donated to local charities after the event. Information sheets and fliers with Nevada-specific information will be handed out to passersby in order to inform the public on the effects of tobacco use in the community. Shoes used in the display will be collected at multiple donation points through March 20. Locations include Keller Williams Realty Las Vegas, 3100 S. Durango Drive, ste. 106, near Summerlin; American Family Insurance, 209 S. Stephanie St., ste. A, in Henderson; and Countrywide Home Loans locations at 2850 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway #100 and 10190 Covington Cross Drive. Additional locations can be found online at www.icanlv.org. “The rate of high school smoking was dropping rapidly in the ‘90s but has tapered off,” said Jamie Ross, I.C.A.N.’s chief executive officer. “This gives a visual representation of all the people who will die in Nevada alone from tobacco. Tobacco companies spend millions marketing to Nevadans and we're doing our part to counteract their effects." I.C.A.N. began in Southern Nevada in 2006, but the organization’s adult leaders have decades of experience in drug and alcohol abuse prevention along with other obstacles that hinder youths’ abilities to make well-informed decisions. Many of the adults were once teens in similar programs, creating a long-lasting legacy of leadership in the community. The group’s annual Leadership Camp, held every summer, provides a curriculum that teaches smart life choices through leadership training. This year’s camp will take place from Aug. 9 to 15 at Camp Lee Canyon. Throughout the school year, youth in grades six through 12 (ages 11-17) attend monthly meetings also held at the Clark County Government Center. Meetings are informational and fun and provide positive alternative activities, a friend base and adult mentors |
